Women & Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America is a project of The Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR). The exhibit tells the story of the Sisters who, since first arriving in America nearly 300 years ago, have shaped the nation. Sustained by a private world of community and faith, they have left a lasting imprint on the public sector. As nurses, teachers, and social workers, sisters entered professional ranks decades earlier than most other women. The hospitals, schools, and social services they established now serve millions.
"Few people are aware of the tales of the brave women who came to this country to help the immigrants assimilate into the fabric of America," said Jane Burke, SSND Executive Director of LCWR. "Their heroic presence during many of the forming periods of our nation is an important part of American history and the legacy of the Sisters." --from www.cincymuseum.org
Rare artifacts and photographs from more than 400 communities are on view to explore the role of Catholic sisters in American life. From the time they first arrived in America nearly 300 years ago, sisters built schools, colleges, hospitals, orphanages, homeless shelters, and many other enduring social institutions. As nurses, teachers, and social workers, they entered professional ranks decades earlier than most other women. They shared common experiences of immigration and migration and endured the same national crises as other Americans. Despite being considered "weak women" by some, these sisters have made a lasting contribution to American life. --from www.si.edu/visit/whatsnew/Ripley.asp
